WARNING REGARDING eBay and US BALMAR SELLERS – The Hidden Costs

Over the years, several individuals have contacted us requesting assistance with products purchased through eBay and other online channels from US sellers.

To be absolutely clear:

  • Neither we, nor any other official UK or EU based Balmar distributor or agent, will provide technical support, installation guidance, troubleshooting assistance, or warranty services for products purchased through these sellers.
  • If you choose to purchase from these sources, you do so entirely at your own risk.

Warranty & Repair Risks

Balmar products are premium marine charging products requiring specialist knowledge and support. Official warranty repairs are carried out only through authorised repair centres familiar with Balmar systems and using genuine Balmar components.

If you purchase through an eBay or other online seller based in the US and later require warranty service, there are generally only two possible outcomes:

  1. The unit must be returned to the United States and processed through the original Balmar account holder who supplied the product; or
  2. The repair is carried out locally by an unauthorised repair facility using non-Balmar automotive-grade replacement parts. This will be entirely your responsibility and will not be covered by Balmars warranty.

Given the high transport costs, customs paperwork, import/export charges, and insurance costs involved in shipping products back to the United States, the second scenario is by far the most likely.

Any repair carried out using non-genuine parts or by unauthorised repairers will invalidate any remaining warranty and could compromise the reliability, safety, and performance of the product.

Hidden Costs of ‘Cheap’ Online Deals

We have also spoken to customers who purchased through online marketplaces such as eBay who discovered significant hidden costs and misleading delivery claims.

Before purchasing, customers should carefully consider the following:

  • While advertised prices must include VAT, they exclude Import Duty, Customs Processing Fees, and shipping insurance.
  • Once dispatched, loss or transit damage is entirely the buyer’s responsibility.
  • Shipping claims of 2–3 day international delivery for less than $20 are simply unrealistic for heavy marine equipment such as alternators.
  • Shipping a Balmar alternator from the United States to the UK using a reputable carrier typically costs well in excess of $100 before duty, customs fees, and insurance are added.

When these additional costs are taken into account — along with the possibility of having to return faulty equipment to the United States at your own expense — authorised UK and EU Balmar agents represent considerably better long-term value.

Delivery Time Frames

One additional point customers should be aware of concerns delivery times and “in stock” claims made by some online retailers and advertising platforms.

In order for products to appear on Google Shopping and many other online advertising networks, sellers are generally required to mark products as “In Stock”. These platforms have no practical way of verifying whether this is actually true and therefore rely entirely on trust.

All too often, customers place an order believing the product is immediately available, only to receive an apologetic email several days later explaining there will be a delay.

The reality is that no Balmar dealer — regardless of size — keeps every alternator model and configuration permanently in stock. Many products are built to order by Balmar and then either:

  1. Shipped to the retailer for forwarding to the customer; or
  2. Sent directly to the customer via a dropship arrangement.

Customers should therefore be cautious of websites implying immediate availability or unrealistically fast delivery times.

If delivery timing is important, ask the seller to confirm in writing that the product is physically in stock and ready for immediate dispatch.

As a general guide, where a product is not already in stock, Balmar typically requires approximately 4–5 working days from receipt of order before dispatch. This allows time for assembly, testing, and quality control procedures. During quieter periods this may be faster, while during peak season lead times may be longer.

Another common source of confusion concerns the term “Back Order”. In fairness, this is not always intended to deceive customers. Many e-commerce platforms — including systems such as WooCommerce — only allow products to be displayed as “In Stock”, “Out of Stock”, or “On Backorder”, even when the actual supply situation is more nuanced.

A quick phone call or email to an authorised dealer will usually provide a far more accurate indication of genuine availability and expected delivery time frames.

It is also worth noting that many UK and EU authorised dealers keep alternators in stock with a particular pulley configuration. In some cases, the dealer may have the alternator model you require available immediately, but fitted with a different pulley. A UK or EU dealer will often be able to swap the pulley to suit your application, usually adding only one or two additional working days depending on workload.

To summarise:

  • Do not rely solely on website stock indicators or vague claims such as “expected soon”.
  • Ask for written confirmation that the product is physically in stock.
  • If the seller cannot, or is unwilling to provide a realistic estimated delivery date, consider purchasing elsewhere.
  • If timing is critical, speak to a reputable Balmar agent and ask whether the alternator is in stock, and if necessary, whether pulley changes can be carried out prior to dispatch.

As with all specialist marine equipment, honest advice and accurate information are every bit as important as the headline price.

Correct Advice Matters

Authorised Balmar agents are trained and approved specifically because of their technical expertise in marine charging systems and engine compatibility.

Recently, a customer contacted us after purchasing an alternator online that was entirely unsuitable for their small engine. Although the alternator physically fitted the mounting bracket, it placed excessive load on the engine crankshaft bearings, ultimately causing severe mechanical damage and repair costs exceeding £3,500.

The online seller refused to assist.

This is precisely why Balmar appoints trained specialist agents rather than simply selling through  online “box shifters”. Proper system design, alternator sizing, pulley selection, charging strategy, and engine suitability all matter enormously.

Just because an alternator physically fits does not mean it is safe or appropriate for your engine.

Final Warning

Balmar products are premium products backed by premium support when purchased correctly through authorised channels.

If you choose to buy from overseas sellers simply to save a few pounds, please understand:

  • You will not receive official support from agents based in the UK or EU.
  • You will not receive authorised warranty assistance from agents based in the UK or EU.
  • You may receive incorrect technical advice if the seller is not a Balmar specialist.
  • You will be left entirely responsible for repair, shipping, customs, and replacement costs.

In simple terms, if you purchase from online sellers based outside of the UK or EU, you are on your own. No UK or EU Balmar agent will be prepared to assist in any way – or at least, certainly not for free.

As the old legal principle says:

‘Caveat emptor’ — let the buyer beware.
