The Balmar 60-Series High-Output Alternator is the world’s most popular upgrade for marine engines. Designed specifically to replace low-output, internally regulated stock alternators, the 60-Series delivers incredible charging power in a compact “small case” frame that fits into the tightest engine rooms. Fitted with a 3.15″ dual-foot mount, this alternator is the industry’s reliable workhorse for small to mid-sized sailing and cruising vessels.
Product Description.
- High Performance in a Compact Package: While stock alternators are typically designed for light automotive-style loads and short durations, the 60-Series is engineered for the heavy-duty cycles required to charge deep-cycle marine battery banks.
- Small Case Design: Engineered to be a direct-fit replacement for most stock alternators fitted by engine manufacturers like Yanmar, Westerbeke and Perkins.
- Isolated Ground: Standard isolated ground configuration protects your engine and drive train from stray current and electrolysis—a critical feature for aluminum and steel vessels.
- SmartReady® Technology: For ultimate reliability, the XT-DF features an integrated 14.1V SmartReady® internal regulator. This acts as a critical secondary “fail-safe” charging source for your vessel. While we recommend pairing this alternator with a Balmar MC-618 or MC-624 external regulator for superior multi-stage charging performance, the internal unit provides vital redundancy. Should your external regulation system ever encounter a fault, you can quickly switch to the internal backup to ensure your batteries stay charged and your essential navigation systems remain powered.
- Dual Internal Fans: Equipped with high-efficiency internal fans to maximize airflow and cooling, allowing the alternator to run cooler and maintain higher output for longer.
Why Choose the 60-Series?
- Optimized for External Regulation: While some stock alternators use simple internal regulators, the 60-Series is designed to work seamlessly with Balmar digital regulators. This allows for multi-stage “smart” charging that protects your batteries and reduces engine run time.
- Superior Low-RPM Charging: Unlike automotive alternators that require high engine speeds to produce power, the 60-Series is wound to provide substantial charging current at low RPMs, ensuring your batteries are being replenished while you are maneuvering or idling.
- Heavy-Duty Construction: Built with high-quality bearings and robust internal components designed to survive the vibration and moisture of a marine engine compartment.

Installation Notes
- Pulley Requirements: High-output alternators place substantial mechanical load on your drive system. While a single V pulley is sufficient for the 12V 100A version, 24V 70A and 12V 120A models require at least a Dual V pulley to handle the increased torque. For maximum reliability and to prevent belt slippage, a multi-groove serpentine belt is strongly recommended.
- External Regulator: To achieve maximum efficiency and ensure proper battery health, this alternator should be used with an external P-type regulator (e.g., Balmar MC-618).
