When you have multiple charging sources, it can be difficult for them to coordinate and achieve the most efficient charge. Say your battery is at 12 volts but when one engine/alternator begins charging, the voltage jumps up to 14 volts. The second engine/alternator then sees this high voltage not as an indication of a full battery, but rather as its current state. As a result, only one alternator ends up doing all the work while the other just coasts – not damaging but far from ideal or energy-efficient.
