Sometimes a customer will call to say the Altmount serpentine pulley upgrade kit doesn’t fit properly. There are usually two reasons for this –
- Paint on the existing pulleys are preventing the new Altmount pulleys from seating properly. Simply clean of some of the existing paint until the new pulley sits properly.
- The alternator pulley doesn’t fit the alternator spindle. Altmounts are designed to be used primarily with Balmar alternators. The spindle on ‘6’ and ‘XT’ alternators is 17mm, large case alternators such as the ’95’, ’97’ and ’98’ series have a .875″ spindle.
If you are using the original alternator that came with the engine, the spindle diameter may be slightly less than 17mm, so you will need to employ some slight engineering in order to make it fit properly (ie. build up the shaft diameter), or source a pulley of the correct profile and bore diameter for your alternator. Unfortunately, we are unable to help with this.
If in doubt as to whether the pulley will fit, measure the shaft with a micrometer before ordering. If you order, then open and attempt to fit without measuring first, we can not offer a refund, refunds are only given on products returned in an ‘as new’ condition, and in an unopened box. We can not, and will not resell a product that has been opened, scratched and covered in oily fingerprints.
Of course there’s always the possibility that you ordered a kit for the wrong engine, but then if you’re not sure what engine you have, then perhaps you shouldn’t be ‘fiddling’ in the first place. If in doubt, consult a trained, qualified and competent engineer, you should be able to find someone here.
