I want more amps from my alternator, how do I increase its output?

Working with alternators, we cannot control the current directly but by adjusting the voltage, we can influence it. This concept is governed by Ohm’s Law: I=E/R where ‘I’ stands for current, ‘E’ stands for voltage and ‘R’ represents the resistance of a battery (also referred to as its State of Charge).

As an example, when dealing with a battery exhibiting 0.2 ohms of resistance, applying 12 volts will generate 60 amps (12 ÷ 0.2 = 60), while upping this to 14 volts results in 70 amps (14 ÷ 0.2 = 70). When batteries become more charged however, their resistance increases bringing down the amount of current flowing through them – for example if a battery exhibits 0.5 ohms resistance then 14 volts will only produce 28 amps (14 ÷ 0.5 = 28).

In order to make sure you’re producing optimal levels of power, always begin by double-checking all connections and making sure they are clean and secure since bad connections cause higher levels or resistances which in turn reduce current flows. An easy way to increase said flow is increasing the voltage output from your Balmar regulator – try adding tenths of a Volt until you find an adequate level of power that works best for your system needs.
